Choosing a Mover

In the US, the average citizen moves approximately every five years. At any given time, a great many consumers are faced with the important and challenging task of choosing a moving company. While many individual factors need to be considered when choosing the mover that's right for you, it is always critical to be a well-informed consumer. The below tips are designed to make your decision as smooth and easy as possible.

1) Ask friends, family and colleagues for referrals to movers with whom they've had good experiences. Typically, first person referrals are the most reliable method of finding a quality mover.

2) Prior to calling for moving estimates, take time to carefully assess the scope of your move:

  • Will you be selling or donating items prior to your move, or moving everything in your current household?
  • Will you need packing, unpacking, or storage services? Knowing the services you'll require will save time when calling, and allow for the most accurate estimate.

3) Prior to calling a moving company, it is critical to verify the following information:

  • A legitimate physical address should always be listed on the company website.
  • Information regarding valuation (transit protection) options should be clearly stated and accessible on the website and on written materials.
  • The company's licensing numbers should be clearly stated on all materials.

4) Research the professional affiliations and consumer reports of any company you are considering. Important consumer-rights organizations include:

Most reputable moving companies also choose to join the American Moving and Storage Association (AMSA). Membership in AMSA ascertains that a company has agreed to abide by the published tariffs, and to participate in its arbitration program.

When calling for an estimate, plan on spending a least fifteen minutes speaking with a company representative. If they take time to thoroughly understand your moving needs, it's a good indicator of the level of service that the company offers. Company representatives should be friendly, helpful, knowledgeable, and prompt to respond to questions.

5) Educate yourself on the difference between binding and non-binding estimates and be certain which type you agree to. The estimate should always be available in writing, and your representative should be able to satisfactorily answer any questions you may have about your estimate.

GENERAL TIPS:

  • Be aware that websites which offer to place your move out to bid with numerous companies, known as brokers, do not screen nor verify the practices of any of the companies with whom they work.
  • When hiring an interstate mover, always ask whether they own and operate their own vehicles, or whether they work with origin and/or destination agents. If the moving company contracts with agents, ask for specifics about exactly who will be moving your goods.
  • Do not hire a moving company which accepts only cash.
