WASHINGTON, DC - Gentle Giant Moving Company, an award winning moving and storage company based in Massachusetts with locations in seven additional states, today announced that it has established a central hub for its Washington, DC area operations with a location in the city's downtown area. 2009 will be the first full year that Gentle Giant will have its own full-service warehouse with storage and office space within the District of Columbia, strategically located near key residential neighborhoods. Gentle Giant has been serving customers in the metro-DC area with crews from its Lorton, Va. location since 2006.
Gentle Giant holds a multi-year lease in the Washington, DC facilities at 5782 2nd Street which include 5,700 square feet of storage capacity for customers, as well as office space from which the company dispatches crews. Previously, the company lacked facilities closer to customers in DC neighborhoods where it hopes to have an increased presence going forward. With its second location in the region, Gentle Giant now has the capacity to conduct upwards of 1,000 local residential and commercial moves per year.
Local operations and aspects of sales and marketing will be handled by recently-appointed Regional Manager Matt Packebusch, who has been with the company since 2004. In the coming months Gentle Giant expects its roster of employees in the region to double so that it can handle the increase in demand that occurs in the Spring and Summer. In 2008, the company's revenues in the region were more than double what they were in 2007.
Approaching its 30th year in Boston, Mass. Gentle Giant Moving Company states that pursuing a regional growth strategy by establishing itself in major US cities like Washington, DC enables the company to develop its unique interstate moving business line. Unlike the vast majority of interstate movers, Gentle Giant utilizes its own employees exclusively, instead of contracting with other parties for packing, driving, and unloading. Each office location, of which Gentle Giant currently has 17 in eight different states, provides a channel for promoting and fulfilling interstate move services.
"Creating customers for life and providing a superb work environment are our two main priorities," said Gentle Giant President and CEO Larry O'Toole. "Our Washington, DC location is an exciting opportunity for the company to show a whole new community what makes us special and to enable the company to keep thriving for years to come."
Broadening its geographic reach also helps insulate Gentle Giant Moving Company from difficult market conditions. The company states that increasing market share in new regions helps to offset declines in demand in New England, where the company has operated for close to three decades and has a large share of that market, but has experienced a significant slow down in home sales in recent months.
