Somerville, Mass. - Gentle Giant Moving Company CEO Larry O'Toole recently spoke to a group of the country's top business leaders at the Inc. Leadership Conference in Denver, Colorado at Denver Marriot Center, October 27-29. Sponsored by Inc. magazine and Winning Workplaces, the conference focused on "Creating Competitive Cultures."
"I am immensely proud of the culture of leadership and success that we've developed at Gentle Giant over the years," O'Toole said. "By hiring extremely hard working and fit individuals and investing in extensive skills and service training, we have built a company recognized for their professionalism, care, and competence."
O'Toole's hour-long discussion focused on his personal examples of the conference's main theme - leadership strategies that develop the best possible company culture, one that results in a loyal, motivated, inspired, and focused team.
One of Gentle Giant's most unique practices is to have new hires "Run The Stadium," which involves scaling 37 seating sections at Harvard University's roman-style coliseum. O'Toole himself leads the new hires through the paces, testing their mettle and demonstrating the level of commitment and work ethic that he expects from all of his employees. And the run is not just for new recruits, many seasoned veterans join the run again and again, panting alongside new employees to not only demonstrates solidarity, but to improve their own physical performance.
O'Toole was also part of a panel discussion on "Developing New Leaders" at the conference, where he spoke about how important it is for companies to define and nurture their desired company culture. He touched on what has worked for Gentle Giant, including not compromising on values and ethics, being open to feedback, and tying desired behaviors to individual and company growth and success.
A native of Ireland and 1973 engineering graduate of Northeastern University, O'Toole founded Gentle Giant in 1980 with a friend's borrowed truck and a $17 investment: a one-time ad in the Boston Phoenix. Gentle Giant Moving Company has thrived in the 30 years since then, winning dozens of awards for quality of service and its workplace practices and employing hundreds of workers who are proud to be called "Giants."
