Green Moving Company Gentle Giant Moving Company Receives Green Business Award from Chamber of Commerce

Boston Moving Company Recognized by Newton-Needham Chamber for Sustainability Initiatives

SOMERVILLE, MA - Moving and Storage Company Gentle Giant Moving Company, an award winning local and long distance mover based in Mass., has received the 2010 Green Business Award from Newton-Needham Chamber of Commerce.  The chamber's Environment Committee chose to recognize Gentle Giant for the successful implementation of green business practices within the 30 year old organization.  Gentle Giant Moving Company has a branch location in Needham, Mass., one of 17 the company maintains in eight states.  The Newton-Needham Chamber officially recognized Gentle Giant at its annual Green Business Luncheon in May.

Previously Gentle Giant was twice recognized for its environmentally friendly practices. The company received a "Bike Friendly Business" award from the mayor of the city of Boston in 2009.  Gentle Giant was also recognized by the Sustainable Forestry Initiative for responsible sourcing of materials.  Combined, these three examples of public recognition reflect broad efforts within the company to reduce its overall environmental impact and consumption of resources.

"We recognize that our business and overall industry has an impact on the environment that we share with our neighbors and customers," said Gentle Giant CEO Larry O'Toole.  "I'm very proud of the employees at Gentle Giant, who initiated many of our efforts to reduce our environmental impact."

On the company's website the company lists various green initiatives focused on reducing waste, reusing materials whenever possible, and recycling, including:

  • Offering complimentary retrieval of used moving boxes and packing supplies and reselling used Gentle Giant Moving boxes at discounted prices
  • Collecting all non reusable moving boxes and recycling between 60,000 - 80,000 pounds of materials each year
  • Providing moving boxes that are manufactured from 90% post-consumer recycled materials and sourcing the production of moving boxes and packing materials from companies that participate in Sustainable Forestry Initiative programs
  • Use of only biodegradable foam peanuts
  • Use of only bubble wrap that is made from 35% post-consumer recycled materials
Use FSC certified products for external marketing materials
  • Locating branch locations near public transportation to reduce dependence on automobiles by employees

A recent Gentle Giant customer in Charlotte, NC recently wrote, "I was impressed with the awards, but your community involvement and eco-friendly efforts are what really lured me in. Thanks to everyone at the company for doing their part to give back, especially where the environment is concerned."
