Glassboro, New Jersey, is a historic town in Gloucester County with roots in the glassmaking industry. Established in 1779, Glassboro was originally known as “Glass Works in the Woods” due to its role as a hub for glass production. Though the industry has long since declined, it left a lasting imprint on the town’s identity.
Glassboro gained international attention in 1967 when it hosted the Glassboro Summit Conference between U.S. President Lyndon B. Johnson and Soviet Premier Alexei Kosygin. The summit took place at Hollybush Mansion, located on the campus of what is now Rowan University.
Rowan University is central to Glassboro’s modern identity. Founded in 1923 as Glassboro Normal School, it has grown significantly, especially after a $100 million donation from Henry Rowan in 1992, which expanded its programs and facilities. The university now has over 19,000 students and has spurred significant development, particularly in downtown Glassboro.
The Rowan Boulevard project, which connects the university to downtown, is a key part of this development, featuring student housing, retail spaces, and restaurants. The town’s strategic location near major highways also enhances its appeal for businesses and residents.
Glassboro’s community is a blend of long-time residents, students, and newcomers, creating a dynamic atmosphere. The town offers a range of cultural and recreational activities, including festivals, parks, and an emerging arts scene, making it a vibrant and growing community.
